When you open App Settings and click to add channels to your app, you may notice that some of your channels are not listed — even though you can see them in your Production Studio. This article explains why that happens and what to do about it.
Why channels may not appear in App Settings
Every app platform (Roku, Fire TV, Mobile, Apple TV, Android TV) has its own rules about which types of video content it can play. Before a channel appears in the channel selector inside App Settings, Strimm checks whether all the videos in that channel are compatible with that platform. If any videos are incompatible, the channel is hidden from the list.
This is a change from the previous behaviour. Previously, Strimm would let you add any channel to your app and then show a warning if incompatible videos were detected. Now, incompatible channels are filtered out upfront to prevent broken playback in your app.
Video compatibility by platform
Roku
Roku is the most strict platform. It only supports direct video links — files hosted on your own server or CDN in .mp4 or .m3u8 format.
- Supported: Direct
.mp4and.m3u8(HLS) links from your own CDN. - Not supported: YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, or any other streaming platform URLs.
If your channel contains even one YouTube or Vimeo video, it will not appear in Roku App Settings. You must replace all such videos with direct links before the channel becomes eligible.
Fire TV
- Supported: YouTube, Vimeo, and direct
.mp4/.m3u8links. - Channels with a mix of these sources are eligible.
Mobile (iOS & Android), Apple TV, Android TV
- Supported: YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, and direct
.mp4/.m3u8links. - Most channels are eligible for these platforms unless they contain unsupported or broken source links.
Other requirements
In addition to video compatibility, a channel must meet these conditions to appear in App Settings:
- Website embedding is enabled. Go to Channel Settings and make sure Embed This Channel On My Website is turned on. (You can use a placeholder URL like
www.example.comif you don't have a website yet.) - The channel has content. A channel with no videos in its library may not appear.
How to make a channel eligible for Roku
- Go to Production Studio → Add Videos and click Import via URL.
- Enter a direct
.mp4or.m3u8link to your video file hosted on a CDN or web server. - Remove or replace any YouTube, Vimeo, or Dailymotion videos in that channel.
- Enable Allow Private Videos in Channel Settings.
- Return to App Settings — the channel should now appear in the channel list.
